Something scary lurks in the dark shadows of your audition. Something that stirs up the kind of fear inside you that no ghosts or ghouls ever could: A prompt to improvise! Are you saying that you would like me to… put my script away?! [que chilling suspenseful music]
In many auditions, we are asked to put the script down and get the message across in our own words. When we lose our script, we lose our safety net, and we instinctively try to speak from memory, rather than speak from the heart. Our feelings of self-consciousness and fear of being embarrassed tend to activate every defense mechanism in the mind, body, and voice. Consequently, the walls come up and we turn into safe versions of ourselves, suppressing every natural and instinctual urge to be funny, silly, and real, at the risk of appearing flawed or simply (gasp!) human. But, if you’re taking the craft seriously and/or currently auditioning, this must not come into play. You must be able to take big chances and leave it all in the audition room.
In this Halloween Special, you will learn to strengthen your auditions by being comfortable in your own skin. Get out of your head and trust yourself, as you learn to make solid choices and go with your gut. This will lead to wonderful and unexpected moments in your acting, as some of the best lines and choices in movie history came from the willingness to improv in the moment.
And….Dare to have fun in front of some of the Top Youth Agents in NYC! Agents love talent that is not afraid to take chances. In fact, ask them yourself! We will be joined by top NYC agents Bonnie Shumofsky (STEWART TALENT) and Mallory Levy (DDO). Will they get a taste of your fearless spontaneity?
We believe you will….this improv showcase is open to all ages.
