It’s the heart of all acting.  The actor does not determine where the scene goes.  You need to loosen your wanting to control the copy and the scene and allow it to go where it naturally goes.  You must be vulnerable and focus on all things external, especially the people you are speaking to or want something from.   Yes, this is why improvisation is a must.  You must have the courage to react spontaneously to what’s coming at you.  It’s will produce magic.

We tend to place so much significance on our spoken words that we underestimate the tremendous power of silence. What happens in those moments of a scene where you’re not talking? Are you listening? Are you taking in all the verbal and visual signals in order to react truthfully? Or are you simply just waiting for your cue? It’s all about your partner!
